Nutella might not be on your radar as much as it is on mine since Finn and Levy are pretty much obsessed with it. If it were up to them every breakfast and lunch would include Nutella, and seemingly any recipe could be made better by adding the hazelnut spread to it according to them. Levy even recently named her brown stuffed pony “Nutella”. BUT, in an effort to feed them healthy foods I have to keep the Nutella consumption down somewhat. This week I’m going to treat them however and make these delicious Nutella stuffed croissants. This recipe is super easy and the kids can get in the spoon licking fun by helping out and adding the Nutella themselves. If you’re not a Nutella fan you can easily make these classic pain au chocolate using any kind of chocolate you want, dark chocolate crossiants anyone? Or how about bacon chocolate (yes they do make this and it can be found at Putnam Market), or make a whole batch using a bunch of different kinds of chocolate options, whatever your taste is, get creative!
1 package puff pastry, thawed
1/2 cup chocolate chips or chocolate chunks
1 egg, lightly beaten
On a lightly floured surface, roll the puff pastry out (if needed) to 1/4-inch thick. Cut into squares 1 1/2-4 inches across and place a chunk of dark chocolate or a few chocolate chips in a strip along the middle. If using Nutella, spread one end with a generous dollop and then fold each side over and place seam-side down on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush with a little beaten egg and bake at 400˚F for 15 minutes, or until golden.
