This edition of My Mom Life is written by Laura Thibeault from Mamatoga Favorite Adirondack Appliance and a mom of four year old triplets. I’m lucky enough to know these adorable kids (and Laura and her husband Tom) myself, and I was so excited to get an inside peek at Laura’s life as a mom of multiples. My favorite piece of advice? “If people offer advice, take it”. Read on for more from Laura…
Do you have time for yourself? What do you do during that time? I rarely get time to do things that aren’t related to my kids or cleaning or working. I do fit in a few facebook games only because it doesn’t require me to think and it breaks up my day.
What advice would you give to other moms about how to balance work and life? If people offer to help you, take it. My family comes first but I know what has to be done for work and when, and I always get it done even if it means staying up late to finish so I can spend time with the kids during the day.
What do you find tricky about your current set-up/schedule? What would you change if you could? Fitting everything into my day! It would be nice to have dedicated work time in the morning and then afternoons where I can just be with my kids not thinking in the back of my mind what I have to get done.
What do you like best about your current set-up/schedule? My job is very flexible for the most part so I can do the work when I can fit it in. I like that I am there for my kids all day and they know I will be there for them.
What is your typical schedule like during the week? The kids wake us up at 5:30 most mornings and it’s a busy morning dressing the kids, feeding them and getting everything ready for school. The boys get on the bus at 8 and then I drive Brenya to school. I either race home for an hour of work here or I try and schedule any appointments during her school. I pick up Brenya and we have lunch together before coming home and getting the boys off the bus. Afternoons are playing outside if we can and then making dinner. After dinner we might go outside more or we wind down with some television or a movie. After baths and bed for the kids I finish up any last minute work I have to do and clean up the kitchen and then I try and relax with some TV before its lights out for me.
What are some of your top must haves for the parenting part of your life? What are some non-mom must haves? My Iphone. It entertains the kids; I can find local parks on it or get directions to places. I can keep up with my work emails while waiting for the bus or Brenya to get out of school etc… I also couldn’t do it without my husband and other family members who help with the kids.
What is one thing you’ve realized/learned about motherhood that no one ever told you before you had kids? It will never be about you again, it’s always about them. Start young with the things you want them to continue doing and don’t spoil them because it only gets worse.
If you had an extra hour in the day you would spend it…? If I didn’t have anything I had to do I would love to read a book. I used to read a lot but I haven’t been able to finish a book in four years.
Is there anything you find yourself doing as a parent that you swore you would never do before you had kids? I call them by their full name when they are bold.
