Here in Saratoga Springs we are truly lucky to be the “summer home” for the world famous New York City Ballet. The New York City Ballet has been part of SPAC’s history for 47 years and the venue was built, with public money, for the group, they even had NYC Ballet founder George Balanchine himself help design the stage. The venue’s opening night, on July 8, 1966, featured the NYC Ballet performing Balanchine’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The troupe is justly considered one of the world’s best ballet companies and it is an understatement to say that it is a privilege to have them right here in our own backyard.
However, if we want to continue to see them here in Saratoga Springs we MUST support them, and an easy (and incredibly enjoyable) way to do that is to attend a performance. SPAC depends on us, the public, to attend performances, benefits, and fundraisers so they can continue to bring us this world class entertainment and art.
According to SPAC President Marcia White, the average cost to present the ballet company for one night is $180,000 and the average ticket is $35. She explained that the costs cannot be made up by SPAC’s contract with Live Nation, which earns the venue about $1 million annually. Ticket income from the ballet performances and SPAC’s other resident company, the Philadelphia Orchestra, covers only about a third of the cost of presenting them with the remainder having to be made up with fundraising.
During their stay here with us the New York City Ballet has performances that the whole family will love, and performances perfect for a date night or a girls night out on the town. This Wednesday, July 18th is SPAC’s Girls Night Out Event and trust me, this is one you don’t want to miss…
Sponsored by Star 101.3, Times Union and Academy of the Holy Names, at the Girls Night Out event you get a chance to experience complimentary massages, mini mani-pedi’s, yoga, make-up consultations, hair blowouts, nutrition advice, tarot card reading, palm reading, complimentary fine wine, chocolate tastings and more. A perfect opportunity to treat yourself and relax with the girls, plus the highlight of the night is that you get to take in the gorgeous ballet performance of Romeo and Juliet. The evening also includes a Pre-Performance Talk: Conversation with a NYCB dancer starting at 7pm in the Gold Room in the Hall of Springs.
Courtesy of Pediatric Dentistry of Glens Falls (an amazing supporter of SPAC), I am giving away TWO FREE tickets to Girls Night Out. To enter you simply have to go “like” Pediatric Dentistry of Glens Falls on facebook here and then comment here below to win. Simply tell me why YOU need a Girls Night Out (don’t we all?) and I will pick one winner at random to win both tickets, one for you and one for the friend of your choice to enjoy it with you. Regardless of who wins, I urge each and every one of you to make it to at least one performance of the New York City Ballet this season, it is truly a remarkable experience that you will remember always. I have heard so many people say that they have never attended a ballet performance at SPAC and I have to say you are definitely missing out. We are so lucky to have the chance to see them right here, let’s make sure they return for years and years to come.
The contest winner will be announced on facebook and right here tomorrow at noon. Good luck everyone, and I will see you at the ballet! xoxo Jenny
