How about healthy eating? Can you actually eat a healthy diet and really like what you eat? Is it possible to get excited over vegetables and fruit and whole grain whatever?
And furthermore, is it necessary?
I have been wrapping my brain around this theme for the last couple weeks. My opinion is varied, and not all that decisive.
I will try to explain what I am thinking as best as I can because I think this is a conversation that needs to be had.
In other areas of our life, we understand that fun can’t always be the number one priority. Many people work jobs they don’t necessarily like because they know they need income to pay the bills. We know that, at least, if we have the comfort of knowing we can pay the bills at the end of each month, it can relieve certain stresses and give us a feeling of safety.
I look at health the same way. I know that if I make the healthiest choices possible and take care of my body, I have the satisfaction and comfort in knowing I am doing as much as I can, to ensure that my life is a healthy one.
Aside from the Lyme disease I was diagnosed with a while back (and am recovering from just nicely) and the four wisdom teeth I have to have removed this month (Happy 40th!), I cannot tell you the last time I was sick.
The common cold? I haven’t had one in a really long time. Before I seriously changed my eating habits, I was sick at least three times a year, and I remember my colds would hang on forever!
It is great not having to deal with the stress of being sick. Being sick is NOT fun.
When I go to the gym to work out, I do sometimes get excited if I am starting a new program, because I love striving towards new goals and learning new things. But there are many days I don’t necessarily want to take the time out for fitness. I do it because I know it is important.
I am not jumping around the gym like it’s a party. I am focused, getting it done, and out the door.
When I leave? I feel great! I know I have accomplished something that is important and adds to the quality of my life, big time.
As for food? Food is not for entertainment. I know this may come as a shock to many, but it’s true. Food is your fuel. Food is MY fuel. I only want to put the best quality fuel in my body! What you put into your body shows on the outside. Not just your weight, but your skin tone, your hair, your energy levels, your brain function. It is ALL affected by the nutrients you choose to put in your body.
Many people are consuming daily diets that are almost entirely void of nutrients. No wonder people feel deprived when they try to lose weight, or select low calorie “diet plans” that consist of fake food void of any real nutritional value.
I would be miserable too, If I was hungry all the time AND not digesting anything that my body truly needed!
Add healthier choices to your diet one at a time, and swap out the “junk”. Fruits, vegetables, lean meats (if you eat meat), and whole grains should make up the bulk of your diet. I eat a lot of nuts and beans to make up for the protein I miss from meat since I am a vegan.
And pay attention to where your food comes from and what goes in it. Go to your local farmers market to buy your eggs, meat, veggies, and fruits.
And buy what is in season, whenever possible.
Learning about new foods and how to prepare them? Now THAT is fun.
Helping local people earn a living by supporting their local farms and small businesses while you actually get to meet and chat with them? Now THAT is fun too.
Gee, I don’t know. I guess my idea of fun might seem nerdy or largely skewed in the eyes of a lot of people.
All I can tell you is, it makes me happy. And to me, happy is fun.
Now get out there!
