On New Year’s Day I woke up feeling not well. Headache, body aches, chills. No, I wasn’t hungover (my exciting NYE included pizza with the kids, going to bed at 9:45 and no drinking), I had the flu. Or so I thought. Turns out, I had mastitis, and I had it bad.
After a few days of flu like symptoms and staying in bed with the baby I began to feel better, but I also noticed that I wasn’t producing as much milk because of the mastitis, and I wanted to find something that might help me boost it back up to what it had been. I had heard of “breastfeeding cookies” before, and had even tried making them myself without great results, so when Amber from The Bundle Store suggested Milkmakers Oatmeal Raisin Cookie mix I was more than willing to give it a go.
The mix is super simple, just add eggs, water and butter (I used some Earth Balance vegan butter sticks instead of real butter) and bake. They turned out super soft and nicely chewy and I found it difficult to stick to the “two a day” suggestion because they were so yummy, miles away from the dry, mealy ones I had made for myself.
The key ingredients in the Milkmakers lactation cookie are oats, brewer’s yeast, and flax seed, all traditional remedies used to help increase breast milk production:
- Oats are a nutritional powerhouse, providing whole grains, fiber, iron, and an abundance of healthy vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.
- Brewer’s yeast is a traditional herbal remedy used to stimulate and increase the production of breast milk and is a rich source of the B-vitamins and amino acids essential for nursing moms and their babies.
- Flax seed provides tons of omega-3 fatty acids, necessary for brain development, which can be passed from mother to baby through breast milk.
I tried the raisin cookies but they also have a chocolate chip cookie if you want a little bit more sweetness with your cookie. This made me about twelve cookies, and you can freeze any extras you have and take them out as needed. I loved that the mix is made using all natural and mostly organic ingredients with no preservatives, and the true test, the kids liked them too (aka snagged a couple while I was trying to take a photo for this post).
So I ate the cookies for a few days, upped my water intake, rested a little bit more and nursed a little bit more and things are definitely back to the way they were! Rather than just an “emergency” type of supplement I can see myself buying this mix regularly to make a few cookies a week part of my routine as a nursing mom (along with my Power Mom smoothie).
As you guys know, breastfeeding hasn’t always been easy for me, and it isn’t always easy for everyone, no matter what some people may try to tell you. It can be a difficult road for some, sometimes including hurdles like plugged ducts and mastitis and soreness and just all around uncomfortableness.
