What to get a new mom? Something practical or something she wouldn’t buy for herself? I got a LOT of different answers (including the number one suggested item, read on for that one) for what to shower a new mom with. For the complete story click here for Mamatoga Magazine’s Spring Issue.
Becky: I get a basket (even maybe just a plastic laundry basket) and fill it with items that you NEED (but might not know it): diapers/wipes, Infant Motrin/Tylenol, Boudreau’s Butt Paste, Nipple cream and shields, gas drops, infant Q-tips, breastmilk storage bags, and maybe some gloves, bibs, or booties.
Melissa: an oversized LL Bean Boat & Tote bag with the monogram (if known) of the baby’s initial or name. It is great for lugging all the gear and is usually the first thing they get to see the little one’s name on.
Desiree: Cloth stuff. Diapers, bottom cloths, wash cloths, bibs, cotton nursing pads. Also emory boards. If it’s a good friend, a Moby wrap.
Sabrina Houser A lovey.
Erin: Honest Company products.
Andrea: Muslin receiving blankets by aden and anais
Katie: I always do one personalized gift and then a giftcard to where they registered… An indulgent gift and a necessary one
Alyson: A basket filled with Totally Toddler Stain remover,Totally Toddler dryer sheets, Babyganics hand sanitizer, Babyganics cleaner and diapers/wipes.
Mari-ann: I like to do their diaper bag filled with on the go necessities.
Amber: A rock and play (I swear I get to sleep because of it)
And a Dairy Fairy Arden hands free nursing bra. The Arden is the only nursing bra that multitasks as much as you do; nurse and handsfree pump beautifully
Anne: Gift certificates for a massage and lunch at a cafe. With the offer to babysit so she can actually use the gift certificates. The amount of stuff accumulated at a typical shower can be overwhelming and personal tastes vary so much. It is better to give a gift certificate for a service to allow the mother to get out of the house in the first couple months and relax.
Jess: Personalized wall art!
Caitlin: I put together a gift basket in a 31 bag including homemade lotion, wipes, outfit and all other items necessary for a mom on the go
Samantha: Boogie wipes, rock n play, Boudreaux ‘s butt paste, and a mani/pedi for the mommy to be!
Alicia: Rock n Play Sleeper & a Dust Buster!
Julianna: A collection of my favorite children’s books, everything from The Gruffalo to Charlottes Web.
Kate: gift certificate for house cleaning or meal delivery!
Genienne: A gift certificate for a pre-delivery Mani/Pedi! It’s always about the baby. I want them to feel pampered too!
Christine: Aden & Anais swaddle blankets
Colleen: Gift certificate for professional pics
Bethany: A copy of Nursing Your Baby by Karen Pryor and a boppy. Or a snuggle bunny bouncer.
Brandi: A plastic tub in pink or blue filled with baby bath products (burt’s bees), bath towels, sponges and bath toys.
Jona: a copy of the Gentle Babies book, a diffuser and a couple bottles of EOs.
Lisa: I like to do a bath tub with all of the bath products and maybe some towels and washcloths.
Brittney: I’d put together a basket of Bamboobies goodies, AppleCheeks Cloth Diapers, aden + anais swaddle blankets, an Ergobaby wrap, and a cute pair of little baby pjs!
Mary Ellen: Love You Forever
Joyce: A gift certificate for a newborn photo shoot with the most amazing newborn photographer ever !
Meredith: My favorite gift was a stack of Children’s books. I didn’t have any as a first time parent, and I still think of that friend every time I read those books to my kids!
Nicole: White noise machine!!!!!!
now for the most popular item…the rock and play (I had one of these too, they are pretty great)!
