Opening Day 2011

I will spare all of you my overuse of my favorite heat related "word" here, and I will spare all of you the description of just how hot and steamy it was yesterday for the Opening Day of the Saratoga Racecourse and just say that is was a beautiful and VERY SUNNY day. In fact, I felt like our table on the Porch might have been located directly next to the sun at times. But it was, as I said, a beautiful day for the first day of racing, and we had a great table close to the track where we could almost feel the spray coming off the horses being cooled down by attentive grooms. Being able to have a home base table to sit at makes it so much easier to be at the track with the kids, and we promptly ordered a bucket of Saratoga sparkling water and a melon plate. The melon plate, three neat rows on a big white square plate of honeydew, cantaloupe and watermelon was a huge hit with the kids and is something I will definitely order again when I'm there with them. We didn't stick it out the entire day however, and the Nina came and rescued the boy and the girl about two and a half hours into the day anyway, but a good time was had by all, if not a particularly lucky day. S. and I might venture over for the last couple of races today to try our luck again sans kids, after asking them what their picks are, of course.
