Mamatoga Top Ten: Baby Food

One of my all time favorite movies growing up was Baby Boom. In case you haven't gotten the chance to catch it, let me give you a brief synopsis. Diane Keaton is J.C. high powered 80's style yuppie executive who has her life turned upside down when her distant cousin (whom she hasn't seen in twenty years) dies and leaves J.C. as the caretaker of her baby. Because that ALWAYS happens. Anyway, so J.C. makes a major life change, quits her job and heads to Vermont with baby in tow. She, in order, goes a little nuts, starts making baby food, falls in love with the vet, and hits it big with said baby food business. There is much soul searching when J.C. is presented with the chance to return to her high powered life or to go back to Vermont, but I won't ruin it for you. It was a weird movie for me to like at the time, considering I was 9 when it came out and a movie about a woman who builds her own homemade baby food business shouldn't have interested me quite so much, but I loved it and I still do. I'd be lying if I didn't have scenes of it running through my head when I've made my own baby food in the past for Finn and Lev. Buying the apples from the Farmers' Market, peeling and slicing and steaming and blending, I fancied myself a bona fide J.C. Wyatt in the making. And that was BEFORE all of these amazing new baby food gadgets came out. Here in this Top Ten I'll give you the best new baby food gadgets and tools so you can create your own gourmet baby food, plus the best picks for baby food on the go. Who knows, you might even launch your own wildly successful baby food company out of your kitchen and be forced to choose between your staid regular life and that of a high flying 80's yuppie executive!

  • Beaba Babycook When Levy was born my friend from college bought me this baby food maker, and it sat in my kitchen while I impatiently awaited the time that I would be able to start using it. This French-made blender, steamer, defroster and reheater all in one unit is a one stop shop for baby food making. Easy to use, easy to clean and nice and small it is a little baby food powerhouse. I love it, and I love it even more now that it also has these two great accessories...

  • Beaba Babycook Seasoning Ball When I saw this I knew I had to buy it immediately. Even though, yes, I realize Baby Jack will not be eating baby food for some months, but I was just too excited about this amazing little tool. This specially designed, mini silicone ball diffuses aromas and spices in your Babycook for delicious, perfectly seasoned food so I can help Jack develop his little palate at an early age. My brother Teddy the chef will be proud.

  • To round out my Babycook love, behold this rice cooker accessory. The Beaba Babycook Rice Cooker fits inside your Babycook, transforming it into a rice cooker! It easily steams wheat, pasta, rice, or other starchy foods with no stirring, plus it can be washed in the dishwasher, and like all of the Babycook accessories it is BPA free! I'm in love.

  • Once you've made your perfectly seasoned and steamed baby food, where are you going to store it? I love these little glass containers from Wean Green, not only because I love the name, but because I personally think everything tastes better coming out of glass, and because it's glass you don't have to worry about any bad chemicals leaching out.

  • When you're on the go, the next best thing to your own homemade baby food has to be these amazing new flavors by Plum Organics. I love Plum because everything they make is always certified organic, nutrient rich with no high fructose corn syrup, no trans fats, no artificial ingredients and its in BPA-free packaging. And now, besides wholesome fruits and vegetables, they're using great ingredients like amaranth, quinoa, millet and barley, ingredients that are hard to find in other baby foods on the market.

  • And now feeding your baby yummy Plum on the go couldn't be easier with the Boon Spoon! I love this little BPA-free, Phthalate-free and PVC-free spoon that fits any Plum Organics JUST fruit and Second Blends baby food pouches for convenient one-handed feeding.

  • Even with a handy dandy spoon attachment we all know baby food can get a little messy. My new favorite bibs come from one of my favorite baby brands, Aden and Anais. These 100% muslin cotton burpy bibs are great because they do double duty, first as burp cloths which are nice and big and are designed to drape over your shoulder, then when baby is ready for food it snaps around their neck as a nice big bib. Add in the cute designs Aden and Anais is known for and you have a great baby product.

  • For those of you, like myself, that can be considered "culinary challenged" a baby food cookbook is a must. It definitely helps out when you find yourself stuck in a rut and need some ideas, or if you have a picky eater who seems to turn their nose up at everything you've come up with so far. I like the Best Homemade Baby Food on the Planet, full of recipes to suit every age and stage-from six months all the way to twenty-three months this book shows you how simple and easy it is to prepare food from quick purées like Mighty Tasty Blueberry and Pear Mash and No-Cook Prune Purée, to new and nourishing meals like Sweet Omelet Surprise and Finger-Lickin’ Good Lentils and Potato with Cheese.

  • Now that you've made the food, let's focus on how to get it IN your baby. I love these bamboo feeding spoons by bambu. Made from Certified organic bamboo, these spoons are a healthy alternative to plastic and have a handle designed for parents and a spoon end designed for baby sized mouths.

  • An important part of feeding your baby their first meals is the high chair. There are TONS on the market, and the first one I purchased when Finn was born turned out to be a plastic, behemoth eyesore. I used it maybe once or twice, banged my toe on it a hundred times during those uses, then folded it up and sold it, never to be seen again. Then I discovered the Stokke Tripp Trapp. Don't be put off by its slightly higher price tag, because this amazingly well made piece will be with your family well past the first meals your child has in it. The modern design and clean wood styling are a beautiful addition to any interior, and the high chair actually grows with your child well into the teenage years, evolving from a high chair to a child’s chair, and finally to an adult sized seat. Available in a ton of great colors it is a classic design, but it’s also an investment.
