Mamatoga Guest Post: Michelle from 5 for fiVe: Race for a Cure

It’s just days before our annual event and there are so many great things to share. I wanted to give Mamatoga the inside scoop, first because of the support she has offered me and second because I love her followers (especially because I’m one myself)! For those of you who don’t know, my race, 5 for fiVe, is a 5k run in memory of my son who died shortly after his first birthday due to a rare genetic disease. My husband and I started this race three years ago as a way to honor him and continue his legacy. For us it’s mostly about remembrance and awareness. But, putting personal motivations aside, this event is fun for everyone and I’m writing with three reasons why you should attend.

First, helping others is so rewarding! I’m a crazy mess on race day and I don’t get an opportunity to thank each and every one of my participants but I appreciate every runner that comes out regardless of their motivations. Coming to a non-profit event is as rewarding to your inner self as it is to the cause. Participating in 5 for fiVe will allow you to be a part of something special and something bigger than life itself. One look at that cute baby boy’s smile and you will be so happy you ran 3.1 miles even if you’re panting the whole time.

Next, family time! After losing my first born to a horrible ‘unknown’ disease, I understand the value of time. In years past I have focused on appealing to runners but this year our focus is about the family unit. We are offering a 50 yard dash for children 12 and under for free (with an adult registration). All kids will receive a ribbon regardless of time/place, and while supplies last we will be giving out youth shirts (sizes medium and large). To top that, Saratoga Paint and Sip Studio will be on site offering face painting to children.

Last, the raffles! Every year I ask our local community for donations for our event, and every year I am humbled by the overwhelming support. To top it, this year’s raffle prizes are the best yet. I usually don’t reveal the specifics but I just can’t help myself this year. The prizes include a photography session by a wonderful local photographer (Elizabeth Fox Photography), a gift certificate for 4 at Saratoga Paint and Sip Studio, a free overnight stay at the Mansion Inn (a local bed and breakfast with the most inviting atmosphere), a round of golf for two at the Saratoga National Golf Club, a free tasting for two at the Saratoga Winery, Hot Yoga classes, and so many more.

For all of those readers who actually love running, like myself, this event does understand what you like and desire in a 5k event. The event is professionally chip timed. The post race snack table has healthy foods. The competition is stiff, allowing for personal records, but the possibility to receive a place medal in your age group is still very attainable. Not to mention, the course is GORGEOUS.

So, if your plans are open for this Saturday at 10am come to the Warming Hut in the Saratoga State Park with your entire family and your running shoes. If you want a t-shirt for participating I highly recommend pre-registering. Hope to see you there!
