Things I Miss From Growing Up (Things My Kids Will Never Have)

 

  • cupcakes at school for birthdays
  • getting to wear my Halloween costume at school
  • making prank phone calls
  • walking alone to and from school
  • making mix tapes off of the radio

  • the joy of getting a game cartridge to work by just blowing into the end
  • doing all of my research for a school paper using only books from the library
  • learning how to use the card catalog
  • having pen pals
  • putting two dimes in my penny loafers in case I needed to call my mom on a pay phone
  • using the pay phone in my high school right outside the cafeteria
  • the "high dive" diving board at the local pool
  • looking up the phone number of a crush in the phone book
  • not being able to immediately find the answer to something on Wikipedia and actually debating friends as to who knows the right answer
  • having actual prizes inside the cereal boxes rather than some code you need to then enter online or however that works
  • going to a record store to buy a new CD and hoping they still have it in stock
  • flipping through a friend's CD book to see how many you have in common
  • using a VHS tape to record my favorite songs on MTV (when MTV was ONLY videos)
  • seeing the complete skyline when we would go to NYC
  • picking out a watch because I actually needed it to tell the time
  • unfolding and actually using the big giant paper maps from the gas station on road trips
  • taking the phone off the hook if I didn't want anyone to bother me
  • when I thought cable meant the actual little cord connected to our "cable box"

  • working at summer camp and being able to only communicate via mail once a week
  • my grandparents house with one rotary dial phone in it and one big huge television that had no remote and four channels
  • manually rolling the car window down, and being the ONLY one that could control the window on my side
  • the little smiley face "Be Kind Please Rewind" on rental tapes
  • spending hours in the video rental store picking out movies with friends
  • having to sprint to the bathroom during commercial breaks because you couldn't pause television
  • watching Saturday morning cartoons
  • actually losing or winning a baseball game in Little League
  • having only my own brain and a dictionary as "spell check"
  • the excitement of sending my film off to be developed and wondering how the pictures would come out
