This past summer we all got the chance, as a family (me, Sean, the kids AND my Mom) to hang out at Camp TLC (Together Living a Challenge) here in Saratoga Springs. Camp TLC is an on the move camping program that delivers a week of camp and year round programming to children living in hospitals, group homes, and shelters across the country at no charge to the organization. Starting in the summer of 2011, Camp TLC toured the Northeast for 4 weeks and brought camp to partnering organizations via a tractor trailer filled with programming supplies and traveling program staff. Camp TLC launched during the summer of 2011, and “toured” the Northeast for 4 weeks bringing camp to selected organizations in the states of New York, Massachusetts, and Maryland. Camp TLC spent five days in each city and deliver themed-filled activities similar to those provided by residential for-profit camps. In each location they worked within the constraints of the facility and the particular physical or health limitations of the children. And in its first two years, Camp TLC served the needs of more than 500 children and family members for 5 different organizations.
This past summer, Camp TLC was here providing a week of camp for kids whose parents were summer migrant workers. Like the staff of Camp TLC, many of these children live "on the road" and have a hard time creating lasting relationships.
While helping out at camp for a couple days I was lucky enough to meet the powerhouse behind camp, Caroline Baumis and immediately wanted to get involved to help raise funds for this great organization. And that brings me to Horses and Harvest!
On November 3rd, at Druthers Brewery, the Friends of Camp TLC Committee, along with the Mayor, Scott Johnson and his wife, Julie Johnson will host the First Annual "Horses and Harvest" event. For JUST $50 you can enjoy three hours of beer/wine (4-7pm), take part in the amazing silent auction and get involved in the coolest Karaoke, watch the Breeder's Cup Live on the big screen TV next to one of many fire pits, while listening the acoustical sounds of NYC talented recording artists, Angelo Fariello and Joe Salvatore.
I am so excited to be part of this event, and it is the perfect night out for moms and dads! Help us raise money so we can keep this incredible camp going. The two days we spent there last summer left a lasting impression on us all. Getting to know the kids and hear their stories was eye opening. In a town where we are fortunate enough to have camps all summer for horseback riding, art, swimming, tennis, language, soccer, you name it, this camp, for only one week, means so much to these kids. In just the five days they were all there together they made friendships, formed bonds, learned things they wouldn't have had a chance to learn, and to just be kids. Just kids at camp. So I urge you all to come out for this event, a chance to hang out at Druthers with some friends, to give a little back while having a lot of fun together.
