Take Your Kids to the OPERA

opera9762_nDid you know that you can see some amazing opera right here in Saratoga Springs? Lake George Opera, now Opera Saratoga, began with a production of Die Fledermaus at the Diamond Point Theatre on July 5, 1962, playing to an audience of 230. The Company now calls Saratoga Springs home and performs for more than 25,000 people annually at the Spa Little Theater on the grounds of Saratoga Spa State Park and the 500-seat theater is a perfect venue for intimate opera. To date, the Company has performed ninety different fully-staged works by fifty-two different composers, including thirty-three works by American composers and ten premiere productions. Throughout its history, the Company's continued success has been shaped by visionary leaders, talented artists, and critically acclaimed productions. This season you have the opportunity to see two different performances, one that you can even bring the kids to! I'm definitely a supporter of exposing kids to the arts at a young age, and opera is one that most kids won't come across in their elementary school curricula. When you think of a child's world, everything is dancing and movement and singing, and when you bring them to a live theater performance like the opera, they get to see it all being performed right in front of them.

HMS Pinafore is a family-friendly evening of topsy-turvy revelry on the high seas that takes the audience on an uproariously entertaining journey aboard Her Majesty's Ship Pinafore, poking fun at the Royal Navy and British society as it gently satirizes the escapades of love and romance between members of mismatched social classes. Full of sailors and silliness, it's fun for grownups and kids alike.

Kids too young for the opera? They also have a brilliant performance of Lucia di Lammermoor, which brings the Scottish highlands to Saratoga, complete with elements guaranteed to take the audience on a journey of emotions: feuding families, political corruption, forbidden love, and heartbreaking bloodshed.

One of Donizetti’s most famous works, this classic opera illustrates the bel canto opera style of the mid-19th century, which highlights elaborate vocals skillfully crafted to show off the breathtaking extremes of the human voice. A perfect change up to the regular date night, the opera is a thrilling experience that you'll be talking about for weeks.

Take advantage of the opportunity to see either (or both!) of these operas while you can. Add it to the list of reasons why we're lucky to live here in Saratoga Springs, there are so many opportunities to take part in the arts as a family. We'll be checking out the afternoon performance of HMS Pinafore today. Click here to see the schedule and buy tickets, but hurry up! There are only a few performances left!
