Don't Miss The Saratoga 150 Floral Fete and Ice Cream Social Friday, August 2nd

indexicsFriday night bring the whole family to a once in a lifetime celebration of our beautiful city's history with the Saratoga 150 Floral Fete Promenade and Ice Cream Social. The promenade will begin at 7:30pm from the corner of Route 50/Cornelius Vanderbilt Highway and Broadway. The self-decorated, non-motorized division of bicycles, baby carriages, wagons and other contraptions on wheels will join in at Walton Street. The beautiful parade will feature 15 carriages decorated with real flowers and greenery that will come from tree-pruning cuts provided by area tree farms. A mini-replica of an event that was popular in Saratoga in the late 1880’s and early 1900’s, the Floral Fete Promenade will be led by philanthropist and Saratoga 150 honorary co-chair Marylou Whitney, who in 1983 chose the Floral Fete for the theme of her annual racing season ball. Joining her will be her husband John Hendrickson, actress Susan Lucci, and her husband, Helmut Huber. Their lead carriage will be bedecked with pink roses representing the hybrid tea rose that is named for Marylou – the Marylou Whitney Rose that Hendrickson commissioned for “the love of his life”. The carriages will be escorted by the official Saratoga 150 parade vehicle - a re-decorated, red and white, four-stall, starting gate carrying some of New York’s most famous jockeys (the same starting gate seen on the cover of Mamatoga Magazine!). Horses, carriages, wagons, bicycles and more, this will be a one of a kind parade that you won't see the likes of again anytime soon!

As the promenade continues down Broadway to Congress Park, the public is invited by Marylou Whitney and John Hendrickson to a free, community-wide ice cream social in the park. The Ice Cream Social will feature five flavors of free hand-dipped Stewart’s Ice Cream, Saratoga Water, and Freihofer’s chocolate chip cookies, while supplies last, and entertainment, from ragtime music and performing children’s groups to strolling entertainers, will abound. Marylou and John have purchased Saratoga 150 tokens that will be given out to exchange for free rides on the carousel, and a birthday cake will be ceremoniously cut to the sounds of traditional birthday songs.

Don't miss this chance to be part of Saratoga history, and to celebrate 150 years of racing! I can't wait for Friday, I'll be one of the Floral Fete judges and my whole family will be taking part in the parade, I hope to see you there! xoxo
