Mulled wine is the perfect holiday season drink, it's warm, it has cider in it, and it is always a crowd pleaser. Plus, because it's half apple cider, you can have a couple mugs of it without feeling too tipsy. If you DO want to kick it up a notch, I highly recommend a teeny splash of Blanton's bourbon, and it has a little horsey on the top, so Saratoga. Here is my recipe for mulled wine, and trust me, once you go mulled for the holidays, you never go back. I cannot wait to have a little mug of this on Thursday by the fire. xoxo INGREDIENTS:
4 cups apple cider 1 (750-ml) bottle red wine like Hedges CMS Red Columbia Valley Red Blend (find it at Crush and Cask) or André Brunel Côtes du Rhône (find it at Healthy Living Market and Cafe's Divine Wines) 1/4 cup honey 2 cinnamon sticks (it MUST be sticks not ground cinnamon) 1 orange, zested and juiced (if you aren't into citrus too much you can leave this out, it tastes great without the orange as well) 4 whole cloves 4 oranges, peeled, for garnish Blanton's bourbon, a quarter cup or so, if you want to make it a little jazzier (if you can't find this locally pick up some Knob Creek bourbon at Crush and Cask)
Combine the cider, wine, honey, cinnamon sticks, zest, juice, and cloves in a large saucepan, bring to a boil and simmer over low heat for 10 minutes. Pour into mugs, add an orange peel to each and serve. Enjoy, and have a fabulous holiday! xoxo
