Ever since I first moved to this beautiful city, the corner space on Caroline Street, down the street from the Library, has been vacant. I would always comment at what a surprising waste it was to have it empty and would wonder what great place could fill it. This past spring, when Silverwood Gallery opened in that very space it exceeded any dream I had for the perfect shop for Saratoga Springs. Silverwood Gallery is one of those stores that once you walk in you want absolutely everything inside it. I started making a mental Christmas, anniversary, birthday, Valentine's Day list while window shopping before I even got into the store itself. Filled with sophisticated yet charming pieces for the home, Silverwood also has handbags, jewelry, items for pet lovers and artwork. At Silverwood the owners believe a home should be a "a personal, unique space that is welcoming and inspiring" and this is the perfect way to describe the store as well. Each piece is different and special yet also comes together with the other pieces beautifully, which you can see in the little vignettes arranged throughout the bright, sunny space. Each piece also feels as if it can fit into any decor style, whether you have a more classic feel to your home or prefer a modern twist. From the quirky birdhouses to the whimsical fork and spoon chandelier the shop has an attractive attention to detail that only comes when each of the items are thoughtfully hand selected and arranged by someone with a designer's and collector's eye. The store is owned by a mother daughter team, Charlene Wood Courtney and her daughter Chelsea Hoopes Silver and the pieces chosen for the shop reflect both of their tastes which create a fantastic contrast that is also complimentary of both styles. Tiny palm sized gold painted skull candles sit aside pewter antler candelabras and the effect is absolutely perfect. This effect is evident throughout the store, and you can find something for anyone you are shopping for regardless of price or age. The jewelry selection is a great example of there being something for everyone, there are classic leather bracelets adorned with horse bits and uniquely stylish feather earrings as well as handmade items from the Bluma Project which supports women's employment in cooperatives throughout the globe. Whether you are looking for the perfect gift or something special and unique to add to your own home you will be spoiled for choice here, there are little touches to add all the way up to gorgeous pieces of furniture that you will want to design a room around. Charlene Wood Courtney has been a collector of antiques her entire life, and grew up going to antique auctions and shows with her father, Charles R. Wood, who founded and operated the theme parks The Great Escape (originally Storytown) and Gaslight Village, in Lake George. He also co-founded, with actor Paul Newman, the Double H Ranch, a Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for critically ill children, and Silverwood will soon be having a special fundraiser in the store with a percentage of sales going to the Double H Ranch. They are also offering for sale a beautiful bronze sculpture, a smaller version of the one at the Hyde Gallery in Glens Falls with the profits going to the Charles R. Wood Foundation (sculpture pictured below). You can find the sculpture in the gallery section of the shop which features beautiful artwork by local artists. The collection inside the store is always evolving and changing, right now you can stop by and pick up some sophisticated yet really fun Halloween and fall themed pieces to add some autumn style to your home. Any time of year Silverwood Gallery should be your first stop to add some unique beauty and style to your home, it is truly by far one of my Mamatoga favorites.
