Guest Blogger: Jenn from Earthy Crunchy Mama on Cloth Diaper Basics

Although cloth diapering can seem overwhelming at first, once you get a good routine going it can be a simple as using disposables. To simplify things you only need 5 things to get started:   1. Diapers: Although there are many styles of diapers, at the most basic level a cloth diaper is made up of 2 parts: a waterproof cover & an absorbent inner layer.  Most families need between 24 & 36 diapers.

2. Dirty Diaper Storage: People store their dirty diapers in waterproof bags called wetbags.  They come in many different sizes and styles, from pail liners to small travel bags.

3. Wipes: Either cloth or disposable.

4. Poop Solution
: You need a way to get the poop off your diapers. Flushable liners and diaper sprayers now make dealing with poop simple.

5. Washing Routine
: You will need to wash your diapers every 2-3 days with a cloth diaper safe detergent.  Don’t want to wash your own diapers. Check and see if you have a local diaper service.

Sound Simple?  It can be!  Not sure?  Well, the good thing is that cloth diapering is not an all or nothing commitment.  Most families start slowly, with a few diapers and as they gain confidence that this is something they can do full time, they start to add to their diaper stash.
