  • The Lake George Chingachgook Classic - the Annual Ice Fishing Derby takes place this weekend starting today starting Sat, Feb 15th until Sun, Feb 16th from 7am to 4pm at the YMCA Camp Chingachgook on Lake George. The entry fee is $8 per person per day, or $15 for both days. Kids under 12 may register for $5/day or $8 for both days. Cash prizes are awarded for heaviest fish in categories of salmon and lake trout. Runners-up also receive cash winnings. All participants are eligible for door prizes donated by local sporting supply stores. Children 12 years old and younger and under can win a $50 savings bond for the heaviest fish in each category. MONDAY FEB 17th

  • Kids can spend their School Breaks with the Clay Arts Center in Saratoga Springs starting today and running all week. Learn basic skills and techniques on the potters wheel. Create functional pieces such as bowls, cups & mugs to bring home. Ages 9+ No experience necessary. Click here for more info.
  • There will be a week long Winter Enrichment Program this week at SUNY Adirondack - Queensbury Campus, Wilton Center, and Samantha's Cafe and Catering. Cost is $65-$77. Wilton Center Course Offerings include:

    • Hieroglyphs & Egyptian Design Symbols

  • An Environmental Education and Conservation intern from Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park and Children's Librarian, Laura Clark will lead a family snowshoe hike in Congress Park for children ages 5-12 and their parents and caregivers from 11am to 12:30pm. Participants will meet in the Crawshaw Story Room at Saratoga Springs Public Library to receive footprint identification cards and loaner snowshoes, courtesy of Wilton Wildlife, then will walk as a group to Congress Park, don snowshoes and hunt for animal tracks. Space is limited to 20 families or when loaners run out. Please bring your own snowshoes if you have them. Children must be accompanied by parent or caregiver. If there is no snow they will look for mud tracks in the Park and then head back indoors for footprint-related activities. Register in the Children's Room or by calling 584-7860, opt.3

TUESDAY FEB 18th

  • Saratoga Arts offers full-week programs in both theater and visual
    arts for children ages 5-14. Their visual arts campers will learn about famous art and artists while creating their own masterpieces inspired by them; theater campers will learn the basics of theater like character development and set design and will conclude their program with a performance in their Dee Sarno Theater. Saratoga Arts’ faculty know and understand how children learn about and create art and work with students to ensure they are reaching their full artistic potential.   •  There will be some great Winter Break School Vacation Art Workshops at The Hyde Collection Art Museum in Glens Falls starting Tue, Feb 18th until Fri, Feb 21st 10:30am to 12:30pm. Cost is $25 for Hyde members/$30 for non-members. For Ages 6-14. Have art fun in the studio learning new drawing, painting, and sculpting skills. Space is limited. WEDNESDAY FEB 19th

  • February Break: Chinese New Year Zodiac Animals will be at go! World Awareness Children's Museum 89 Warren Street in Glens Falls, free with museum admission from 11am to 1pm. Kids will learn about their zodiac animal and hear about the personalities of the ox, sheep and tiger…to name a few.   •  Balloon artist and comedian, Chad Currin (aka Mr. Twisty), presents a fun-filled program for children and their families at the Saratoga Springs Public Library. Pick up free tickets beginning February 1, 2014. Performances at 11am and 1pm. For ages 3 and up.
  • Owl Prowl is happening from 6-7:45pm. Participants will assemble at Wilton Wildlife Preserve & Park (80 Scout Rd) for a presentation on owls followed by an Owl Prowl to listen for owls. For participants ages 5 & up. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please dress for the weather and bring a flashlight and snowshoes if possible. Some loaners will be available. Facilitated by Sarah Cartwright, Environmental Education & Conservation Fellow at Wilton Wildlife and Laura Clark, Librarian at Saratoga Springs Public Library.   • Have a Lego lover? Bring them to Lego Club at the Saratoga Springs Public Library from 6:30 to 8pm. Children in grades K-5 are welcome to participate. Parents and caregivers are also welcome to attend. Kids will use their imaginations to create buildings, creatures, and other objects. In addition to Lego games and "challenges." This program will not include Lego robotics. There is no registration for this program. Attendance may be limited due to the size of the room. Lego Club will meet the first and third Wednesday of each month.

THURSDAY FEB 20th

  • Head to Saratoga Springs Public Library for a tween craft for students in grades 3-7 from 11:30am to 12:30pm. What are Perler Beads? They are small plastic beads that you use to form a design, iron, and get a plastic fused piece of art. They are super fun to create! Registration is limited to 12.   • February Break: Chinese National Symbols is happening at go! World Awareness Children's Museum 89 Warren Street in Glens Falls from 11am to 1pm. Free with admission, kids will learn about the Chinese flag and the Chinese dragon then create an art project, too! Call 518 793 2773 for more info.

  • Gather round the campfire for stories & songs, enjoy s'mores, make a few wintery crafts and try your luck at a penguin bean bag toss at the Saratoga Springs Public Library from 6:30 - 7:30pm. Their "Paws4Reading" tutors will also be there! For children ages 4-12. Children must be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.

FRIDAY FEB 21st

  • Toddler Story Time at 10:30am at Northshire Bookstore on Broadway in Saratoga Springs.

  • Caregivers, parents, toddlers and preschoolers all learn simple sign language songs, games and activities to promote language and social development in fun ways, from Dancing Bear to Wiggle Like a Worm at Dancin' with My Baby with Lili Loveday at the Saratoga Springs Public Library from 10:15 to 11am. Registration for this program begins February 1. For ages 2.5 - 5 years old and their caregivers.

SATURDAY FEB 22nd

  • The Family Kitchen: From-Scratch…To-Go! is at Healthy Living Market and Cafe's Learning Center from 11am to 1pm. If you and your kid make an unbeatable pair in the kitchen, join them for one of their amazing Family Kitchen classes! This month’s class is all about pasta dishes that are easier to make from-scratch than you’d think. You’ll start by putting together a simple tomato sauce that’s absolutely packed with flavor; it takes only half-an-hour and beats the stuff in a jar by miles. You’ll use your tomato sauce to create quick-and-easy lasagna roll-ups that taste like Grandma’s but take waaay less time. Finishing off the class will be a Mac-n-Cheese that takes about as much time as a boxed version…but tastes a million times better! This hands-on class is $40/ kid-parent pair.   • Clifton Park Halfmoon Library is having their First Multicultural Family Day from 1 to 4pm, a festive event celebrating the cultures, customs, food and craft activities of the different family groups that make our community diverse. Local author Elizabeth Zunon will share her illustrations depicting the multicultural world; picture books available for sale. World Awareness Children's Museum will present several children's programs, including world clothing. A free-trade merchant will present a collection and discuss the background of the fair-trade movement. At 3PM, musician Roger Tincknell will perform his family concert, Under One Sky--A Celebration of Cultural Diversity.   • The 19th Annual Ballston Spa Winter Fun Festival is taking place from 11am to 8pm on Bath Street Hill, Elks Club On Hamilton Street in Ballston Spa. There will be Sledding & Tobogganing on the famous Bath Street hill from 11 am- 5 pm, Washtub Ice Fishing 11 am-12 noon-Front St., Music, Dancing and Free Food (while supplies last) and Children's Crafts 6-8 pm at Ballston Spa Elks Lodge, 10 Hamilton Street. Sponsored by the Village of Ballston Spa and the Town of Milton.

SUNDAY FEB 23rd

  • Saratoga Kids: Artsy Afternoon, Naoko Stoop is at Northshire Bookstore on Broadway in Saratoga Springs starting at 2pm. Kids will read from Naoko Stoop’s charming Red Knit Cap Girl picture books to get inspiration for their own art and will work in the style of Ms Stoop by inventing their own quirky characters and then drawing them on wood! Come enjoy this unique craft appropriate for children ages 4-14, adult company needed.

  • There will be a Black History Month Celebration at the National Museum of Dance 99 South Broadway in Saratoga Springs from 2 to 4pm. Join them for the third annual Black History Month Celebration featuring a Solomon Northup Reenactment by local historian Clifford Oliver, performances by Figures In Flight Released Dance Company and the Mt. Olivet Church Gospel Choir.
