FULLCOVERAGE Rashguards and full protectant suits are a great option for extra sun protection for kids. Many skin-care experts believe clothing shields skin more effectively from UV light than sunscreen, but keep in mind that you should still be applying sunscreen as well for the most protection for young skin.

BONNETMy 9 month old does not like hats, she pulls them right off, with ONE exception, and that is her Beaufort Bonnet Company bonnet. I'll admit, I bought it because it was cute, not because I thought it would be a practical layer of sun protection, but once she wore it for the first time I realized it shields her whole face from the sun and she never tries to pull it off. The Catesby Country Club bonnet is washable (and you can get it monogrammed, LOVE IT).

SUNSCREEN

This organic sunscreen spray from Goddess Garden is free of chemical sunscreens, reef safe, and non-nano and has UVA/UVB broad spectrum SPF 30 protection that your children need and the mineral-only sun protection that we all should have. It is Certified Organic to NSF/ANSI 305 body care standards and water resistant up to 80 minutes. Why mineral sunscreen? Most chemical based sunscreens work by being absorbed into the body, but a natural mineral based sunscreen sits on top of your skin and reflect the sun's rays. Plus, some of the chemicals in sunscreen can be a little iffy. One popular ingredient, oxybenzone, while an excellent filter for UVA rays, is also a synthetic estrogen. If it's absorbed through the skin, it can be an endocrine disrupter.

Retinyl palmitate is often used because it's an antioxidant that boosts the efficacy of UV filters, may also increase photocarcinogenicity, the rate of developing cancerous lesions or tumors from sun exposure, according to a 2009 study. Scary stuff, right? Goddess Garden is all natural, plus Paraben and Phthalate Free, and free from gluten ingredients. Get it locally at The Bundle Store (comes in a baby version too). SWIMDIAPER

Disposable swim diapers can stretch out of shape in the water and can end up rubbing and chafing your baby’s skin and they can also contain questionable chemicals. We've been using the Honest Company's reusable swim diapers for years, and not only do they come in super cute designs like the watermelon print above, they are snug yet comfy for babies, and you save money right away by not having to buy pack after pack of disposables. Plus, they can be used for potty training! Right now Honest also has a swim combo with a swim diaper, a UPF 50 sun shirt and hat.
