Oh, the nighttime routine. Does it always go smoothly? NO. Does it always need to get done? Yes. And we all want to try to make it as gentle as possible, hoping against hope that a nice and easy nighttime routine will mean a nice long snooze for them (and for us). Now, I call these "tub pops" because the easiest and most mess-free way to give my 18 month old and 4 year old an ice pop is in the bath! Plus, having a little sweet treat can be the incentive I need to offer them to get into the bath in the first place sometimes.
We all know chamomile is a great soother, and it can also settle gastrointestinal upsets, which can be common with babies, but getting babies or toddlers to drink chamomile tea? Not the easiest thing ever, but adding them into these pops you get all the benefit of the herb.
Add in some yogurt and banana for flavor and their natural sleep aid abilities: bananas are an excellent source of magnesium and potassium, which help to relax muscles and they also contain tryptophan, which convert to serotonin and melatonin, the brain's key calming hormones. Yogurt (and other dairy products like milk and cheese) contain tryptophan and did you know? Calcium in dairy like yogurt is effective in stress reduction and stabilization of nerve fibers, including those in the brain.
Directions for these pops are super simple: just take one ripe banana, 1/2 cup plain whole milk yogurt and 1/2 cup brewed chamomile tea (cooled completely), put it all into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Pour it into some ice pop molds (these are a great size for toddlers) and give to your little one to enjoy!
